About
lickedcity was established in 2010, born in a university lecture hall on the cover of a notebook.
It began with 3D shapes and architectural line drawing doodles, which soon evolved into full-page designs and a continuous creative output.
The monochromatic style offers an insight into a mind without limitations, demonstrating a unique neuroplasticity in its visual language. This illustrative therapy became a fully immersive experience when paired with music. The different frequencies offered yet further insight into the creativity, shaping the lines and patterns that emerged.
The illustrations developed a distinct aesthetic that resonated deeply with my close friend, Jhade Villa Dean (RIP), a gifted graphic designer with equally impeccable music taste. He encouraged the expansion of this visual language into other areas, including music.
At the time, I was already running a semi-known underground music channel on YouTube (@AJPUK). It naturally became the platform for the #lickedcity playlist that curated a distinct eclectic, underground sound. This was the soundtrack that accompanied the deep, focused states of drawing.
The music + drawing never stopped. It continued whilst moving on tube trains, in parks, with friends, while waiting for haircuts, in remote terrains, and during any other solo endeavour.
The name 'licked' originates from UK urban slang, meaning 'highly under the influence of a substance'. It speaks to the psychedelic visuals combined with cityscapes and the chaotic, almost Aztec, geometric codes that depict the inner and outer worlds. The design style is something that has "no idea" what it does with the pen, yet it flows instinctively.
lickedcity remains a unique, rare form of artwork, suited for any collector, enthusiast, or those hypnotically attuned to detail and visceral intensity.
